CHRISTOPHER MARTIN GALLERY HOUSTON RIDES INTO MARCH WITH TRIFECTA OF WESTERN-THEMED EXPERIENCES, INCLUDING ROUND TOP ANTIQUES SHOW & HOUSTON LIVESTOCK SHOW AND RODEO
HOUSTON, TX – February 16, 2022 – Christopher Martin Gallery's newly opened Houston outpost, which debuted last month in a sophisticated, 2,000-square-foot space at 2625 Colquitt Street along Upper Kirby District's acclaimed Gallery Row, is ushering in March with a trifecta of experiences that promise to bring a taste of the American West to the Texas Gulf Coast.
The Let's Ride exhibition, opening Thursday, March 3, with an artist reception at the gallery from 6 to 9 pm, showcases Western-themed pieces from Dallas-based photographer Steve Wrubel, alongside a selection of works from gallery founder Christopher Martin's flag collection, plus a saddle sculpture cast in bronze from David Middlebrook.
On display through March 31, the show will dive heavily into Wrubel's Wild West series. These works highlight the spirit of adventure and the American experience through the photographer's abstracts of riders on broncos and bulls that have been removed from their rodeo backdrops and placed in natural settings photographed during Wrubel's travels.
“I spend a lot of time driving through the American West while making my way along the rodeo circuit to photography bull and bronco riders,” said Wrubel. “I always have my camera at the ready to capture the wild natural landscapes I encounter during my trips, which are the source photographs that serve as the backdrops to the pieces in my Wild West series. I'm excited about bringing a piece of the American West to Houston through my pieces in this exhibition, and I hope audiences will connect with the wild and untamed spirit of these photographs as much as I do.”
Works from Wrubel will also be on loan through the gallery at restauranteur Ben Berg's pop-up steakhouse and saloon at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo from February 28 through March 20. The Ranch Saloon + Steakhousewill be housed under an expansive, decked-out tent on the grounds of NRG Park. A curated selection of pieces from Wrubel's Wild West and his earlier Rodeo series will add authentic flavor to the richly outfitted space. In Rodeo, Wrubel placed the riders on bronc or bull in a simple stage setting highlighting the performance quality of the sport. This offsite exhibition will provide an apt area of artistic exploration at the largest livestock show and rodeo on the planet.
Finally, Christopher Martin Gallery Houston goes road tripping with a pop-up at The Halles during the Round Top Spring Antiques Show from March 19 through April 2. The Halles experience, launched at the famed fair last fall, encompasses 20,000 square feet of event space featuring a curated list of designers, dealers, food vendors, and public art. A selection of framed, limited edition pieces from Wrubel's Wild West series and a collection of Texas flags paintings from Christopher Martin will be on display and available for purchase.
