One central theme is present throughout Hobart’s work— “Regaining what has been lost”. Harnessing the unique qualities of infrared photography, he has created images reminiscent of etchings and lithographs from the late 19th century in an effort to transport us back in time when animals roamed freely and provoke us into re-establishing our coexistence with the natural world.

BIOGRAPHY

After a quarter century of success as a commercial photographer, Graham Hobart decided to reassess his purpose as an artist. He returned to his roots in Africa where his love affair with photographing the natural world within the infrared spectrum began.

International recognition came quickly after Hobart shot his Africa series, and his work was exhibited by National Geographic and the Smithsonian Museum. Shortly after this, Seth Hopkins, the director of the Booth Western Art Museum commissioned Hobart to go out and capture the West like he had captured Africa. Thus, the American West series was born.

One central theme is present throughout Hobart’s work— “Regaining what has been lost”. Harnessing the unique qualities of infrared photography, he has created images reminiscent of etchings and lithographs from the late nineteenth century in an effort to transport us back in time when animals roamed freely and provoke us into re-establishing our coexistence with the natural world.

Hobart believes that you can never fully experience life without first getting close to nature. From this, one learns to tread lightly where you walk and listen carefully to all the plants and creatures around you.
