“This picture shows a Sumbanese family working in the rice fields. The Sumbanese people work extremely hard for their basic subsistence, and it is all too common to see very young children, as well as very old people, doing hard labor like carrying water over very long distances to their villages, plowing and planting rice fields, or harvesting them. Those fields are plowed by water buffalo that simply trample the mud. It is interesting to note that, were it not for the humans in the picture who provide a sense of scale, this could be a forest viewed from above instead of a rice field. The Sumbanese people live in great harmony with the land and the ocean which are both essential to their survival.“
